Before you buy one

Worn out, or bolted in wrong?

Before you replace a swing bearing, make sure the bearing is the problem.

Measure the play

Measure tipping clearance with a dial indicator, boom out, and compare it with the machine maker’s limit. Write it down: a second reading later shows how fast it is wearing. DYCO-TP-110 — Dimensional and Metallurgical Verification of Replacement Drive Units →

Check the mounting bolts

Loose or stretched bolts feel just like a worn bearing, and they cost far less to fix. A stretched bolt must be replaced, not re-torqued. DYCO-TP-109 — Preload and Fatigue in Slewing Ring and Final Drive Bolted Joints →

Teeth and raceway wear separately

Worn gear teeth do not mean a worn raceway, or the other way round. Check both before you decide what to buy. DYCO-TP-102 — Contact Fatigue, Pitting and Spalling in Planetary Gear Sets →

Keep it greased

Grease on schedule, until old grease pushes out past the seals. Water and grit that get past the seals pit the raceway. DYCO-TP-114 — Grease Lubrication of Slewing Rings: the Raceway and the Open Gear Mesh →

Ask how it is hardened

The raceway carries the load on a hardened layer a few millimeters deep. You cannot see it from outside, so ask how it is specified. DYCO-TP-105 — Induction-Hardened Raceways in Slewing Ring Bearings →
