Cylinders
Arm and bucket cylinders built to the original bore, rod and stroke geometry. Volvo applications only.
Know the part before you order.
Cylinder replacement is unforgiving on dimensions. Bore, rod diameter, stroke, pin sizes and port positions all have to match, and a close-enough cylinder is a cylinder that does not fit.

Reseal, or replace?
Most leaking cylinders are a seal kit rather than a new cylinder, and that is worth saying plainly by somebody who sells cylinders. The condition of the rod and the bore decides it — not that the thing is wet.
The cheapest outcome on this page
A gland weeping with a sound rod and a sound bore is a seal kit and an afternoon. It is also the most common outcome, and the next three items are how you find out whether you have it.
Drift is not proof the cylinder is at fault
A boom that settles can be the piston seal bypassing inside the cylinder, or a control or holding valve letting it past somewhere else entirely.
Separating them means isolating the cylinder from its circuit — and the load goes down onto the ground or onto blocking first. Nothing about this test is done with a load held up on the hydraulics being tested.
Read the rod before ordering anything
Score marks down the rod, pitting, chrome lifting at an edge. A reseal over a damaged rod comes back in weeks, which is how one cheap repair turns into two.
That plating is thin and hard over softer steel, and once it is broken the edge cuts every new seal you put behind it. DYCO-TP-113 — Piston-Rod Surfaces, Hard Chromium and Gland Loading in Hydraulic Cylinders →
Corrosion is a storage problem, not a duty problem
A machine stood outside with rods extended pits the exposed chrome, and it happens while nothing is working at all.
Cylinders retracted where the design allows it, and a rod wiped rather than jet-washed, costs nothing and is most of the answer. DYCO-TP-113 — Piston-Rod Surfaces, Hard Chromium and Gland Loading in Hydraulic Cylinders →
Side load is what kills glands
Worn pin bushings, a bent rod or a mount out of line load the gland and piston off-axis. The seal then wears on one side and one side only.
Renew the pins and bushes while the cylinder is off, or the replacement wears exactly the way the last one did. DYCO-TP-113 — Piston-Rod Surfaces, Hard Chromium and Gland Loading in Hydraulic Cylinders →
Debris in the circuit scores bores
A cylinder that gave up shortly after a pump failure is not a coincidence. What went through the circuit cut the seals and scored the bore on its way past.
Where that has happened, resealing alone is optimistic and the circuit is the real job. DYCO-TP-106 — Fluid Cleanliness and Component Life in Closed-Circuit Hydrostatic Drives →
Then the dimensions, which are the part
Bore, rod diameter, stroke, closed length, pin and eye sizes, port size and position — confirmed against the unit coming off rather than against a model name. Machines change specification mid-series, and cylinders get moved between positions.
DYCO’s cylinder coverage is Volvo applications only, so anything else is a conversation with a dealer rather than a catalog lookup. DYCO-TP-111 — A Qualification Framework for Non-OEM Drivetrain Components →
None of this is a rule of thumb: each one is a mechanism, and the publication beside it sets out the engineering it rests on.
