Final Drives

Complete planetary travel drives, with or without motor, for excavators.

Know the part before you order.

The planetary gearbox and hydraulic motor that turn the track, and the highest-load component on a tracked machine: its failure stops work outright. DYCO supplies complete drives with motor, gearbox-only units, and travel motors alone.

Before you buy one

Is it the final drive?

The most expensive thing on a tracked machine to guess at. Several faults behave like a failed drive and aren’t one. What killed it usually decides whether the replacement lasts. Roughly in order of what costs least to rule out:

Look at the undercarriage first

A worn sprocket, a seizing roller or a dry track pin reads as a drive on its way out. Same noise, same vibration.

The sprocket bolts to the drive hub — the cheapest thing to be wrong, so inspect it first. A new drive fitted behind a worn sprocket takes that wear straight into its own teeth. DYCO-TP-109 — Preload and Fatigue in Slewing Ring and Final Drive Bolted Joints →

Check track tension, before and after

A track tensioned past specification loads the drive’s bearings continuously, and it is one of the ordinary reasons a second drive fails.

The replacement goes in, the tension is never corrected, and it dies the same way. Tension to the figure in the machine’s manual. It is machine-specific, and a rule of thumb is not a specification. DYCO-TP-104 — Rolling-Element Bearing Life in Travel and Swing Drives →

Establish whether the drive is getting flow

A drive starved of flow behaves like a drive that has failed: slow, weak or dead on one side, often without the noise a mechanical failure makes.

Whether the fault sits upstream — pump, control valve or relief — or inside the gearbox is established before anything is lifted. A hydraulic circuit can hold pressure long after shutdown, so this is work for a qualified technician.

Confirm the parking brake is releasing

Spring-applied wet multi-disc brakes are held off by pressure. Where release pressure is low the discs drag.

That feels like a binding drive from the seat, and it cooks the very oil that is supposed to be carrying the heat away. DYCO-TP-108 — Spring-Applied Wet Multi-Disc Parking Brakes in Travel and Swing Drives →

Read the oil

Draining the gear oil is the cheapest diagnostic there is. Bright flake, or a magnetic plug carrying paste, points at the gear set or the bearings. Clean oil under a wet hub face points somewhere else entirely. DYCO-TP-102 — Contact Fatigue, Pitting and Spalling in Planetary Gear Sets →

A wet hub is not automatically a new drive

Oil at the hub face is usually the floating face seal rather than the gear set.

A seal that has only begun to weep can be replaced. One that has been weeping long enough to run the housing dry has already answered the question for you. DYCO-TP-103 — Floating Face Seals and the Contamination Ingress Cascade →

Then ask what killed it

This is the step that decides whether the replacement lasts.

A drive that failed because the hydraulic oil was dirty will be followed by another one unless the circuit is flushed and the filtration put right first. Fitting a clean unit into a dirty system buys time, not a repair. DYCO-TP-106 — Fluid Cleanliness and Component Life in Closed-Circuit Hydrostatic Drives →

None of this is a rule of thumb: each one is a mechanism, and the publication beside it sets out the engineering it rests on.
